Wow, this is so close to my own thoughts, it's scary. I make one distinction, though. If you go into a restaurant and ask for tea, and they bring you sweet tea without asking what kind, you're in the South. If they ask, you're in what used to be the South until all the damn Yankee carpetbaggers moved down and ruined it.
Having lived my entire life in the Capital of the Confederacy, I can tell you that sweet tea (around our house anyway) was always just "tea" and 1 pitcher of tea contained 1 cup of sugar. And don't go putting that stupid lemon wedge in it, either! :)
And in the South, tea = iced tea. That's just the way it comes. You have to specify hot tea. Whereas in the North, I've either automatically been brought a cup of hot tea, or asked to specify.
