Mystery solved

I was doing laundry the other day (all good stories start that way, right?). I have a stackable washer/dryer and sometimes things fall between them and the wall but eventually get worked out by the vibrations. As I was putting wet clothes in the dryer, I noticed a sock sticking out from behind the door to the laundry closet. I picked it up.

And then realized it wasn’t my sock.

No, really, I’d never seen this sock before.

My first thought (irrational, to be sure) was that someone was breaking into my house and doing laundry.

Then I remembered that my catsitter doesn’t have a washer and dryer and I told her to feel free to use mine when she was watching the boys.

I didn’t realize it was that obvious

Yesterday I walked into the office kitchen to put my mug in the dishwasher. My boss walked in behind me with a fork and a mug. He put the fork in the sink and got some coffee. He then went to leave the room.

WG: Are you just going to leave that fork there?
Boss: Are you the oldest?

(Note: he did put it in the dishwasher.)

How to tell if you are in the South

Last week I had a subcontractor up from Alabama. At one point he asked me, “Is Richmond considered the South?”

I’ve been asked that before. I tend to give the same response. See, during the Civil War/War Between the States/War of Northern Aggression the Southern states seceded from the Union. And formed their own country, the Confederate States of America. Of which Richmond was named the capital. Thus, Richmond is now and forever will be considered the South.

So, I told him, “Yes. Capital of the Confederacy right here. Also, the Sweet tea line is in Fredericksburg.”

Now, you may think that the Mason-Dixon line is what defines the South. But, it’s really the Sweet tea line. Sweet tea is a Southern institution. If you are in a restaurant and you order iced tea and they don’t give you a choice, you are getting Unsweet tea and you are in the North. Or anywhere but the South. If they ask “Sweet or Unsweet” you are in the South.

Note: Sweet tea is not the same as Unsweet tea with sugar packets. At all.

On Sushi

This e-mail was forwarded to me and is possilbly one of the most amusing things I've ever seen.

Dear [Apple],

[Watergirl] says that you might not come to eat sushi. I wish to express my interest in dining on raw fish with you this evening.

That is all.

Things that have amused me this week

The first letter here. And the answer.

This headline because it makes me think, “But fish don’t even have toes!”

The fight between Meghan McCain and Laura Ingraham. Really? You broke out the “She’s fat?” That’s all you’ve got? Brilliant! I won’t even get into how it looks for women, because the article does it quite well.

This conversation:
“It adds a certain je ne sais quois.”
“It looks like Minnie Pearl!”

Road Trip!

This weekend Apple, Lena, Reen, and I headed out to the beach. Virginia Beach, specifically. Apple and Lena were running in the Shamrock 8K. Well, actually, Apple was supposed to run the marathon but didn’t have time to train, so she decided to switch to the 8K. Things happened at work, she wasn’t able to join us until after the 8K and thought she might run the marathon instead. She couldn’t make it out for packet pickup, so I checked in for a marathon. And that is the closest I will ever get to participating in one.

Reen and I watched Lena run; we only caught a glimpse of her once, though. Afterwards, we took naps and Reen and I played cards. There was also wine, of course.

Mostly, we just hung out all weekend- we haven’t been able to do that in a while. Time with the girls, it is important.

Update

Today is better. Apparently I just needed a good crying spell.

Luckily, I have good friends (Y'all included!). And an understanding future sister-in-law. Who, at some point, should get a nickname.
