One of my co-workers just told me (we were talking about the aftermath of Katrina) that "Most people who are poor are poor because they're stupid and/or made bad choices."
I couldn't even argue with him. What could I say? I know what I wanted to say, but it wouldn't change his mind.

I...what? Bad choices? What, to be born black? To have grown up in a depressed economy or a run-down neighborhood with poor public schools? I mean really.
Yes, some things are in your control and some people of limited means did make choices that contributed to their current lifestyle, but to make a sweeping statement about millions of people (12.7 percent of the American population is poor, up 1.1 million in 2 years) is the height of arrogance and stupidity. And you could tell your co-worker I said so, if you were so inclined. Hmmph!
